Film & TV assessment: Learner response

Film & TV assessment: Learner response

The Film & TV assessment was your first test on an in-depth area of study - with a tough postmodernism question thrown in for good measure.

This is an excellent example of the type of question AQA can hit us with and developing our skills in responding to such questions will help us massively in the actual two-hour exams.

The first part of your learner response is to look carefully at your mark, grade and comments from your teacher. If anything doesn't make sense, ask your teacher - it's crucial we're learning from the process of assessments and feedback.

Your learner response is as follows:

Create a new blog post called 'Film & TV assessment learner response' and complete the following tasks:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: some media knowledge/theory/analysis in Q3

EBI: very little gasp of postmodern ideal nor of the chicken case study- really need to complete blog tasks properly.

2) Read the whole mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment (even if you got full marks for the question).
Q1

  • The distinction between actors and characters is arguably breaking down as films allude to stars’ previous roles or reputations or deliberately play an actor against type.
  • The struggle to distribute a micro-budget independent film in a global market dominated by  major conglomerates. Chicken took two years from the film being made (2014) to appearing in cinemas (2016)

  • The first question demanded a response using postmodern terminology. Write a definition here of the three main terms:

4) The second question was on the film industry. Write down two points from the mark scheme about Chicken's promotion and distribution that you didn't include in your answer.

  • Chicken successfully used the film festival circuit to gather critical acclaim and build up positive publicity for the film. Film festival awards included Edinburgh, Busan, New Hampshire, Palm Beach and Julien.

  • Small cinema release in arthouse cinemas appropriate distribution for the film – a British social realist drama. Similarly, Film4 was a good home for TV premiere in April 2017. It was also selected for the curated film subscription service MUBI aimed at more discerning, educated film fans.

5) Look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 25 mark essay question on your TV Close-Study Products. Write a complete essay plan for this question based on the suggested answers in the mark scheme. You can either use something similar to your actual answer or alternatively start from scratch. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed plan focused on the question (representations) and offering specific references to Capital and Deutschland 83 for each section. Try and cover the two texts equally if you can and aim to plan around 5-6 paragraphs in total.

Capital
Focus is on a diverse range of characters across race, class, ethnicity, family structure etc.Drama is structured around a London street which is real and a microcosm or symbol of the nation. The ‘state of the nation’ sub-genre demands that social and cultural context is
reflected. But does Capital merely reflect social and cultural context of middle-class, wealthy Londoners?
The drama uses narrative realism (use of recognisable places, people, cultures, events) to
create a representation of London in 2015 that is designed to appear authentic but perhaps

subtly reinforces capitalist ideologies (e.g. reward for hard work).
if i had integrated these points in my work then i would've been able to get a better grade and have a better understanding of the question which would've enabled me to showcase my ability and the understanding i have for the csp.

Deutschland 83
The series is likely to be interpreted differently depending on national contexts – the
reception in Germany was different to other European countries or the USA.
Representations may be more recognisable to international audiences and therefore not
reflective of social and cultural context (perhaps a reason for lack of success in native

Germany).
This too would've further enabled my understanding of the csp but due to me missing lessons i didn't have a full understanding and in this case i should've took it upon myself to research and understand the key concepts and points that Deutschland 83 makes.
