Moonlight review
Chiron is a character of few words. Why is this?
because hes been bullied and he feels as though no body understands him due to him being gay.
How do the three actors use body language to communicate Chiron’s emotions to the
audience?
His body language communicates a lot to the audience throughout the film as he is shy to speak and the main way then audience get a understanding of chirons emotions and what hes trying to communicate is through the reaction of the two other characters and how they take care of him better the more they are able to understand him.
Why is he reluctant to make eye contact with people?
because he feels as though no one likes him or cares about him due to him being bullied and neglected by his mother.
• Did anything about the Miami setting surprise you, compared to
its party image in popular culture?
In the film the Miami culture was shown very differently to popular belief as Miami is shown to be drug run and a place of violence and poverty.
How does the saturated colour capture the image of the city the filmmakers are trying to convey?
The use of saturated colour of the cities houses made the area look run down and an area of poverty where plants struggle to grow and having life is almost a luxury.
• What is the significance of Juan? How is his influence felt over the
entire film, despite the fact he is only present in the first chapter?
Juan is a good friend to Chiron and tries to help him over come his fear of being bullied for being gay he also looks after him offering shelter and food.
• Several key sequences take place on the beach, or near the ocean.
Why do you think the filmmakers centred so much of the film around
this location?
Because these are quiet spots and not in view to the major public and these places are almost hidden which may be a linking point or resemblance of Chiron trying to keep his sexuality hidden.
• Did anything about Chiron in the final chapter surprise you?
the fact that he had gone from being bullied and over coming his fear of them to being a drug dealer who was hard on people himself.
To what extent do you think he is being true to “himself” before and after his
reunion with Kevin
I think he had become true to himself after his reunion with kevin as he felt comfortable and they ended up spending time alone again in the closing scene of the film.
What did you make of his various nicknames?
his nicknames that he had may have shaped the person he grew up tyo be as his nicknames changed as he grew older.
